February\/March marks the start of the carnival season in Brazil. We’re very involved in preparing neighborhood carnivals, in the form of upstream workshops so that local residents, and children in particular, can be the budding musicians and dancers of their own event, under the guidance of our staff. It’s all the energy of a real Brazilian samba school with a Ch’ti twist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The drums are ready, the dancers are warming up and the audience is gathering. It’s time for the carnival ball, the big dress rehearsal before taking to the streets for the parade. Samba schools in Brazil make a real neighborhood party of it, bringing together all the musicians and dancers to rehearse together to the sound of percussion, singing, swaying, multicolored costumes, not to mention food, drinks and an electric atmosphere, as the party gets down to the nitty-gritty. After Carnival, the Festas juninas (June festivals) are the most popular in Brazil, celebrated to the sound of the accordion in a guinguette atmosphere. Dancing to a syncopated country-style rhythm, forro and European quadrille. Families are invited to bring their plaid shirts and straw hats for the men, and long floral skirts and braids for the women.
